Deja vu 'recreated in laboratory'

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/5194382.stm

Scientists believe they have found a way to probe the mysterious phenomenon of feeling you have witnessed something before - deja vu.

Leeds Memory Group researchers say they have gone some way to recreating the sensation in the lab using hypnosis.

New Scientist magazine reports the researchers hope their work will shed light on the fundamental workings of the human memory.

It is estimated that as many as 97% of people have experienced deja vu.

In some severe cases it can be distressing to the point of causing depression and some sufferers have been prescribed anti-psychotic medication.

However, experts suspect that many people who experience the sensation are unwilling to discuss it with their doctor.

Two stage process

Two key processes are thought to occur when someone recognises a familiar object or scene.

First, the brain searches through memory traces to see if the contents of that scene have been observed before.

If they have, a separate part of the brain then identifies the scene or object as being familiar.

In deja vu, this second process may occur by mistake, so that a feeling of familiarity is triggered by a novel object or scene.

The Leeds team set out to create a sense of deja vu among volunteers in a lab.

They used hypnosis to trigger only the second part of the recognition process - hoping to create a sense of familiarity about something a person had not seen before.

The researchers showed volunteers 24 common words, then hypnotised them and told them that when they were next presented with a word in a red frame, they would feel that the word was familiar, although they would not know when they last saw it.

Green frames would make them think that the word belonged to the original list of 24.

Peculiar sensation

After being taken out of hypnosis, the volunteers were presented with a series of words in frames of various colours, including some that were not in the original 24 and which were framed in red or green.

Of the 18 people studied so far, 10 reported a peculiar sensation when they saw new words in red frames and five said it definitely felt like deja vu.

Researcher Akira O'Connor presented the findings to an International Conference on Memory in Sydney, Australia.

He told New Scientist: "This tells us that it is possible to experimentally dissociate these two processes, which is really important in establishing that they are indeed separate."

Some people with temporal lobe epilepsy report frequent deja vu.

And previous work in France has found that electrically stimulating parts of the temporal lobe can trigger a sensation of familiarity with everything a person encounters.

Professor Alan Brown, an expert in deja vu at South Methodist University in Dallas, said: "Using hypnotic suggestion to either stimulate, or simulate, a deja vu experience could potentially be a very fruitful way to explore this phenomenon.

"I don't have a lot of detail about the Leeds project but from what I know it certainly seems to be solid work with an intriguing outcome."

The Biggest Internet Scam In Recent History

The Biggest Internet Scam In Recent History

http://www.securitypronews.com/news/securi...entHistory.html

Are you interested in hearing about the biggest internet scam in recent history...

NO! Would you be interested if you discovered that it is possibly you that was scammed several months ago and did not even know it? In fact, if you were scammed back then you probably have had money removed from your bank account every month AND you may not even know you are losing your money. Now you are interested!

This foundation for this breech of internet security started a couple of years ago as a gift from your caring politicians and bureaucrats in the form of bank funds electronic transfer legislation. Simply stated, if you owe anyone money they (whoever) can 'electronically' withdraw it from your account without your permission if they have a contract in place.

A few weeks back a neighbor lady came to me venting her disapproval because some unknown and unnamed internet company had cleaned out her banking account. She was going to complain, bring legal suit and if she could find a real person she was going to do really mean things. It took 5 minutes and three questions to find out she was into a legal binding electronic contract she knew nothing about.

Questions 1: Did you buy and download (very key) any information from the internet. Usually a CD or something similar. Answer-YES.

Question 2: Did you knowingly enter into a binding contract with these people. Answer: ABSOLUTELY NOT!! Real answer-Yes

Question 3: Did you read all the fine print including the "Terms and Services". Answer: NO, BUT I KNOW THERE WAS NO CONTRACT OF ANY SORT. Real answer-NO I did not read the fine print. After displaying the website it took the whole of about 15-20 milliseconds to see the scam. I had to explain it three times before the dear lady could see it. Then the next question: "What can I do? I have tried to stop it." The result was she had to close out here bank account to kill the credit card.

Here is how it works. Either through email or PPC or some other way you end up on a webpage that, for example, guarantees to make you $187,594.26 in 30 minutes while working at home 10 minutes a day. Maybe this is slightly exaggerated but you get the picture. They usually have a CD that will give you all the information you need to carry off this money making project. Normally this CD would cost $99 but if you act within the next 2 hours, being the good guy you are you get it for free.

Now this is great deal. What is not to like? Wait there is one more thing. It only fair that since the CD is free that you should pay the shipping and handling. I think that is only fair don't you. Stop and read the above paragraph carefully again. What is wrong with this scenario? Where is the big red flapping flag!

DA!? This is the internet remember. The keywords are digital, electronic, and downloadable. If the information is electronically downloadable why send it by snail mail? What does this transaction yield to the creditor website? Your credit card information! Why is that a worry, the shipping cost is so small; only $7-8.

Now Question 2 comes into focus. Somewhere on the website there is a free trail offer (usually 15-30 days) that comes with a 'on line resident expert' attached. If the CD doesn't contain all the information you need the expert is on call to answer your questions. He/she might not speak English or have any relevant knowledge or experience on the subject but you get the free service for 15-30 days notwithstanding.

Here comes the neat part. Look at question 3 again. Did you read the fine print included in the terms and conditions? Of course not, no one reads that stuff. I bet you do from now on. Somewhere in the fine print it will say something like. 'You can unsubscribe from the normal service of the expert within the trial period (15-30 days) and there will be no penalty. However, if you do not unsubscribe we will take the normal amount (usually $20-40) out of your credit card account monthly." But, you say, that does not a contract make. You are absolutely correct. Except!

It is the little check box down where you enter you credit card information for the handling and shipping to get your 'free' CD that causes all the problems. "Buy checking this box you agree to all the terms and conditions" of the website - meaning the month to month withdrawal of your funds if you do not unsubscribe during the free trail period. That constitutes a legal contract under the electronic signature legislation. You have just agreed to send that company a monthly payment for services for the rest of you life or until you stop it.

Hold on, it only gets better. How many people do you know that really check their credit card statements in detail every month? Apparently not enough. A $30 withdrawal might stay hidden in your 4+ page credit card statement for months. Then when you do find it try to get it stopped. I tracked down an internet company doing this very thing; it took about three days of intense research. I sent an email to the highest officer we could find demanding to stop, stating we had no contract. I got back an email with the following answer; "Oh yes you do.' He was correct.

The moral of this story is simple. You must prevent this scam before it begins. In writing or generating legal documents of any kind, especially electronically, there is one absolute generic rule. "READ THE MAIL, UNDERSTAND THE MAIL and ANSWER THE MAIL"

In other words if you are reading and understanding every word on a website, conduct your business with confidence. If not my recommendation is "DO NOT ELECTRONCIALLY SIGN ANY THING, IT MAY CONTAIN A HIDDEN CONTRACT". Read the fine print. Make sure you know exactly what you are electronically signing. Answer ever detail with personal knowledge as to what it means; even if you have to read the terms and conditions a dozen times. Reject them if there are any questions.

Internet security is a serious matter that can only be controlled through knowledge by those people using the internet. Do not rely on a piece of software or a firewall entirely. Internet scams are perpetrated by very intelligent people that can think and work around most internet security devices.

Remember what Smokey the Bear says; "Only you can prevent internet scams!" Well, if he didn't say it he should have.

P.T. Barnum did say. "There is a sucker born every minute."

I say on the internet there are one million suckers born every minute.

Court Says Border Agents Have the Right to Search Your Laptop

http://gizmodo.com/?refId=190354

Customs agents already have the power now to search your luggage when you cross borders, thanks to a circuit court ruling, they have the power to inspect the data on your laptops as well. The decision was handed down relating to this case:

Stuart Romm boarded a plane in Las Vegas on February 1, 2004. When he got off the plane in British Columbia, Canada's Border Services Agency stopped Romm for questioning. After learning that Romm had a criminal background, Agent Keith Brown searched his laptop and discovered child porn sites in Romm's Internet history list. Canada then bundled Romm back onto a plane to Seattle, where US Customs agents had a chance to question him further.

We've heard of cases of 1-hour photo stores calling the police when they find people's pictures of their infants, semi-clothed, on vacation. Imagine the misunderstanding it will cause when customs agents find the same thing on your laptops—or possibly digital cameras as well. You may want to think twice about taking that shot of junior in the pool in Cancun.

CNN's YouTube Envy

http://business2.blogs.com/business2blog/2...youtube_en.html

CNN.com (which, like my employer, Business 2.0, is part of Time Warner), is having a YouTube moment.

Today it launched CNN Exchange, which is a new part of its site where the audience members can submit their own newsworthy "I-Reports." These can be photos, videos, or simple eyewitness accounts. The idea is that the best ones might be used on the Website or even on TV, or just spur additional coverage. It's a baby step (but an important one) towards including the audience as an active participant in the news-making process. (Don't confuse this with the other Web video news out of Time Warner today, AOL Video's planned relaunch on Friday. Also, CNN.com is a different site than CNNMoney.com, which hosts B2.0's Website. I know it's confusing. It's a big company).

Youtubevscnn CNN is not YouTube, and it never will be YouTube. It's not trying to be. The free-for-all nature of YouTube is not appropriate for a journalistic enterprise where people expect the videos, photos, and stories to be vetted and checked for accuracy. You cannot really automate that. And I'm not even sure to what extent CNN.com is going to do that, rather than just keep all the ranters and attention-seekers at a safe distance on a separate part of the site. At the same time, CNN.com knows that it is competing for attention with YouTube (see chart). It also knows that it is increasingly going to be showing video footage captured by everyday observers with camcorders both online and on TV. So why pull that footage off YouTube if it can get people to post that juicy video on its own site?

That's the big question for this venture. On YouTube, there are no gatekeepers. So you know pretty much anything you upload will be available for anyone in the world to see. CNN.com, by necessity, will be interrupting that feedback loop. But that feedback loop is extremely important, especially in the early days, because it is the primary mechanism (aka, ego boost) that will motivate people to submit video and other reports.

The other primary motivator will be the prospect of making the news and seeing your stuff on CNN proper. That is something YouTube cannot offer (at least, not on a regular basis). But here is where I think CNN.com is missing an opportunity. In the terms of service on CNN Exchange, it makes clear that anything submitted can be used by CNN any way it wishes, and it won't pay you for it. For the bulk of content submitted on the site, that is as it should be. But why not give the audience something to shoot for by offering a nominal fee for any content that, say, hits a certain threshhold of pageviews or makes it on TV? It would still be cheaper than paying professionals to create the content. And by paying the top contributors, CNN.com would be able to motivate everyone who contributes as long as everyone can strive for that same prize.

Of course, you don't get paid for anything you put up on YouTube either. But it's not starting from scratch in the tap-the-audience-for-your-content game.

Dave Winer's Scripting news

http://www.scripting.com/

The Newspaper's All-Blog Future

http://www.micropersuasion.com/2006/08/the_newspapers_.html

I can't find the link for the life of me, but a couple of years ago (if I recall correctly) Dave Winer predicted that the New York Times one day would basically become just one big blog. At the time I raised an eyebrow. However, after taking a good look at USA Today's On Deadline news blog I think he might be right and sooner than I imagined.

USA Today On Deadline is basically a real-time breaking news blog. It is written by a pair of bloggers. They're not just bloggers, mind you, but full-time bloggers. According to USATODAY.com VP/Editor-in-Chief Kinsey Wilson the two are "mashing must-read scoops against weird-news quirks at a feverish pace of 30 posts a day." Some of these posts even make it into print.

On Deadline is a natural fit for a brand that for years was nicknamed McPaper. It's consistent with USA Today's trademark short, often quirky stories. Although blogs are not helping newspapers (yet) attract younger readers to their sites, blogs like On Deadline point to a future where newspapers - and perhaps all media - will be published mostly in bite-size chunks. The success of the 10 minute clip on YouTube also highlights our love for the quick and the fun.

USA Today already has lots of blogs but what they're missing is a real-time blog on sports, another one of their strengths. I would love to see them take the On Deadline model and roll out blogs that give NBA, MLB, NFL and NHL game-by-game updates in near real-time. They could break these blogs down by team too. Celebrity gossip is also an area where USA Today should play with blogs.

Whether they take this to the next level or not is still an open question. What is known, however, is that USA Today, with On Deadline, is changing journalism and with it PR. As newspapers increasingly rely on blogs and short videos, our client reports are going to consist of a lot more quick hits than in-depth reports.
