For small and midsize companies, in particular—and thanks to its ability to narrowly target prospects, tightly manage spending, and precisely measure results—PPC is one of the most efficient lead generation tools ever developed. It does, however, have a downside. Because PPC campaigns are so quick to set up and start, a business owner can easily waste thousands of dollars in a matter of weeks before learning some hard (and expensive) lessons about what works and what doesn't. The purpose of this brief article is to point out the most common mistakes made with PPC so that your efforts begin generating results as quickly and efficiently as possible. Mistake No. 1: Use your homepage as the landing page When you set up a PPC ad, whether it's with Google, Yahoo or any other search engine, it's up to you to decide where to direct the people who click on your ad. By default, most companies simply send clickers to the company homepage. After all, they reason, if the homepage is the digital equivalent of the company front door, shouldn't we bring prospects there as a starting point? No, and here's why: Most company homepages cover too many subjects and have too much going on to work as effective landing pages. Simply dropping a searcher there in the hope that he finds what he's looking for almost guarantees frustration and failure. Remember, a person who initiates a Web search is looking for something specific. Tossing him to a generic homepage (with the implicit message, "Here, you figure it out") will work against your intention of converting ad clicks into leads. Instead, the most effective PPC ads take clickers to a tightly focused landing page—a page specifically developed and matched to the subject of the search, with minimal distractions, a strong call to action, and a well-thought-out process for moving the searcher to the next step, whether that's requesting information, signing up for a newsletter, or making a purchase. Fix No. 1: Always take clickers to a well-crafted landing page, distinct from the company homepage. Mistake No. 2: Don't bid enough to secure a top spot PPC works on an auction model, giving you, the advertiser, the option of deciding how much you want to pay for a particular search term. In effect, you can choose how high up in the ad listings you want to appear. All else being equal, the more you pay relative to other advertisers, the higher up your ad will be. Popular search terms can have a dozen or more ads listed in order on search results pages, giving the impression that anyone can drive clicks with PPC. But consider this startling statistic: 85% of all PPC clicks are on ads in one of the top three positions. The remaining ads—whether there are five more or 50—share the scraps. In practice, this means that unless you bid high enough to get into one of the top three spots, you're wasting your time. You're not wasting money, since if nobody clicks you pay nothing, but if you choose to be hidden further down the list, you'll have trouble generating the leads you want to close the sales you need. Fix No. 2: Choose search terms and manage bids in such a way that you'll consistently appear in one of the top three spots. Mistake No. 3: Don't make your ad copy specific Yahoo allows you 190 characters (including spaces) in your text ad. Google allows just 70. No pictures, no colors, no company logo... just a few words. Many advertisers waste this precious space with vague, meaningless terms (e.g., quality, economical, good service) or general statements that don't clearly explain the uniqueness of their offering. When that occurs, one of two things can happen—both of them bad. The first is that searchers don't click on your ad. Again, it doesn't cost you anything, but it doesn't help you meet your objectives, either. The second bad thing is much worse, since in this case it costs you both time and money: The wrong searchers click. In other words, your ad causes clicks, but those who click—thanks to poorly written ad copy—are not good candidates for your product or service. You pay for the clicks, but the leads go nowhere. Fix No. 3: Be specific and unique in your ad copy. If you've got patented or otherwise unique features, a particular market or application expertise, unusually friendly return policies or warranties, or something else that sets you apart, this is the place to mention it. Mistake No. 4: Don't align your landing page with searchers' keywords Here's how the ideal PPC sequence should work: A searcher goes to Google and inputs the search term red widget. Your ad pops up and the term red widget is in both its headline and in the ad copy. The searcher clicks on your ad (because you're in one of the top three spots) and arrives at a landing page that is specifically about red widgets. No confusion, no hesitation, no wondering that maybe this isn't the right place after all. The searcher is systematically taken down a Keyword Flow path from start to finish. The important thing to keep in mind is that Web searchers have lots of options and are presented with lots of data. Together, this leads to impatience and a tendency to abandon any search that doesn't quickly and easily lead to a desired result. Fix No. 4: Make sure your landing pages stay focused on the key words which bring clickers there in the first place (you may have several landing pages, simply to ensure Keyword Flow). You'll increase clicks, increase conversions and as a result, increase ROI. Mistake No. 5: Don't bother with testing One of the things that make PPC advertising so compelling—particularly for those with limited ad dollars—is that it is instantly and perfectly testable. Unlike an ad in the newspaper, on the radio, in a trade journal, or in any of the other traditional, offline media, PPC dollars are trackable. You can not only tell which words were clicked on but also follow the click all the way through to a completed conversion (newsletter sign-up, literature request, sale, etc.). It's critical, therefore, to constantly and continually test PPC results—tinkering with or discarding the keywords, ads, and landing pages that don't work—and making improvements along the way. You will not get everything right from the start, that's guaranteed. But thanks to the data that PPC advertising generates, you have the ability to fine-tune the process and continually improve your ROI. Fix No. 5: Test, test, test. It's easy to do and with a bit of focused attention, you can improve your results dramatically. * * * PPC has a tremendous amount to offer the small and midsize business owner or marketer. Keep these five guidelines in mind as you establish your PPC campaigns, and you'll be turning clicks into profits in no time! http://www.marketingprofs.com/6/grant1.asp ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- E-mail And Phone Have High Response Rates http://www.webpronews.com/blogtalk/blogtal...ponseRates.html Feeds And Other Optimization Opportunities http://www.webpronews.com/blogtalk/blogtal...ortunities.html Marketing And The Right Person Myth http://www.webpronews.com/blogtalk/blogtal...PersonMyth.html Black Friday Cashes In Online http://www.webpronews.com/insiderreports/m...esInOnline.html Next Time, Fly With SeatGuru http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/topnews/...thSeatGuru.html http://www.seatguru.com/ Podcasts Catching On, Slowly http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/topnews/...ngOnSlowly.html Google Prevents Plagiarism http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/topnews/...Plagiarism.html Early Birds Should Sleep In On Black Friday http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/topnews/...lackFriday.html Can Apple,Beatles Work It Out? http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/topnews/...sWorkItOut.html FeedCycle: Smarter Serialized Stories http://www.techcrunch.com/2006/11/26/feedc...alized-stories/ http://www.feedcycle.com/ links for 2006-11-27 http://www.micropersuasion.com/2006/11/lin...r_20061_21.html Digg Issues Cease and Desist to Diggdot.us http://www.micropersuasion.com/2006/11/digg_issues_cea.html Savvier Web retailers expect more holiday profits http://news.com.com/Savvier+Web+retailers+...ml?tag=nefd.top Barron's: Google shares set for fall http://news.com.com/Barrons+Google+shares+...ml?tag=nefd.top Carson Daly takes a Web-centric turn http://news.com.com/Carson+Daly+takes+a+We...ml?tag=nefd.top Xerox seeks self-erasing paper http://news.com.com/Xerox+seeks+self-erasi...ml?tag=nefd.top Salesforce adds connector apps to Apex http://news.com.com/Salesforce+adds+connec...ml?tag=nefd.top Agencies line up for plug-in cars http://news.com.com/Agencies+line+up+for+p...l?tag=nefd.lede Supreme Court to examine 'obviousness' of patents http://news.com.com/Supreme+Court+to+exami...l?tag=nefd.lede Fantasy football leagues score big with fans http://news.com.com/Fantasy+football+leagu...l?tag=nefd.lede Viral Video Meets DRTV in Brilliantly Goofy Site Promotion http://www.adrants.com/2006/11/viral-video...liantly-goo.php RUMOUR Google Base & PPC - coming soon to a computer near you. http://www.threadwatch.org/node/10366 Googles Plans for Australia http://www.threadwatch.org/node/10371 Format Text Tool http://www.entrepreneurs-journey.com/576/format-text-tool/ WalMart's Deceptive 'Astroturf' Blog http://www.marketingshift.com/2006/11/walm...roturf-blog.cfm Mobile Phone Operators Quaking in their Boots http://www.marketingpilgrim.com/2006/11/mo...heir-boots.html Google: Mobile operators want to block our apps http://news.zdnet.co.uk/communications/0,1...39284850,00.htm Google Checkout Adding $10 to $30 Charity Donation http://www.marketingpilgrim.com/2006/11/go...y-donation.html Beginners Guide to Buying Links for SEO http://www.marketingpilgrim.com/2006/11/be...ks-for-seo.html Search Engine College Launches “Certification Pathways” http://www.marketingpilgrim.com/2006/11/se...n-pathways.html http://www.searchenginecollege.com/search-...on-pathways.htm Microsoft bCentral Directory Closes http://www.marketingpilgrim.com/2006/11/mi...ory-closes.html Mayor: Police barrage at groom 'unacceptable' http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/11/27/nyc.shooting.ap/index.html Study: Humpback whales have 'human' brain cells http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/science/11/27...reut/index.html Pamela Anderson, Kid Rock divorcing http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/TV/11/27/p...k.ap/index.html Turkish PM agrees to meet pope http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/europe/11/27...rkey/index.html 'Twelve days of Christmas' gets pricier Rising labor costs and surging demand for pear trees lead to a 3.1 percent increase in PNC's 'Christmas Price Index.' http://money.cnn.com/2006/11/27/news/econo...dex.htm?cnn=yes Man kills friend over $20 football bet http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/foot...ex.html?cnn=yes Spy death: 5 have radiation tests http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/europe/11/27/uk.spy/index.html Anshe Chung: First Virtual Millionaire http://money.cnn.com/blogs/legalpad/index.html?cnn=yes Missouri group home fire kills 10, injures 24 http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/11/27/grouphome...e.ap/index.html Annan: Iraqis 'almost' in civil war http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/11/27/us.iraq.ap/index.html 8 Smart moves to make by year end These strategies will cut your taxes and prep you for the new year. While it's not the only way to measure the health of a site (time spent and unique users are among the others), it's still very popular. Unfortunately, the trusty page view is on life support and I give it four years to live. This may sound like heresy to most of you. After all, the page view has served us well. It has established a universal way to measure web sites. However, the metric is about to become a moot point. The page view does not offer a suitable way to measure the next generation of web sites. These sites will be built with Ajax, Flash and other interactive technologies that allow the user to conduct affairs all within a single web page - like Gmail or the Google Reader. This eliminates the need to click from one page to another. The widgetization of the web will only accelerate this. This is a dirty little secret in the advertising business that no one wants to talk about. Media companies love to promote how many page views their properties get. They've used the data to build equity. They will fight it tooth and nail to protect it, perhaps by not embracing interactive technologies as quickly as they shuld. But that's not going to stop the revolution from coming. Microsoft (an Edelman client) and Google are each pushing platforms that are very interactive and reduce the need to turn pages. Over time millions of users will grow to love these services. They will like how they can accomplish so much so quickly, without ever having to go anywhere else. Smart companies like ESPN and The New York Times get it so they're wisely establishing their own interactive platforms. But they're in the minority. As the page view platform crumbles, there's going to be a shake out. Everyone is going to scramble to find a metric that helps them compete for ad dollars. Enjoy the show. http://www.micropersuasion.com/2006/12/the_iminent_dem.html ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- links for 2006-12-01 http://www.micropersuasion.com/2006/11/lin...r_20061_24.html Chat with Me Live Tonight http://www.micropersuasion.com/2006/11/chat_with_me_li.html Hot sauce for FEMA http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/anderson.c...e-for-fema.html Spy murder mystery: The medical questions http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/anderson.c...-questions.html Kerry assessing impact of 'botched joke' on '08 prospects http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/12/01/ker...8.ap/index.html Players fight back Union sues the NBA over new ball, tighter officiating http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/bask...ex.html?cnn=yes DHS official admits taking bribes to fake documents http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/12/01/homeland....rity/index.html Los Angeles fire chief retires amid racial, hazing flaps http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/12/01/firefight...g.ap/index.html Dead spy's wife contaminated with radiation http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/europe/12/01...wrap/index.html Beware the falling dollar Sure, it's good for Detroit, U.S. exporters and the tourism biz. ADVERTISEMENT Incoming Senate Judiciary Chairman Sen. Patrick Leahy (news, bio, voting record) of Vermont pledged greater scrutiny of such government database-mining projects after reading that during the past four years millions of Americans have been evaluated without their knowledge to assess the risks that they are terrorists or criminals. "Data banks like this are overdue for oversight," said Leahy, who will take over Judiciary in January. "That is going to change in the new Congress." The Associated Press reported Thursday that Americans and foreigners crossing U.S. borders since 2002 have been assessed by the Homeland Security Department's computerized Automated Targeting System, or ATS. The travelers are not allowed to see or directly challenge these risk assessments, which the government intends to keep on file for 40 years. Some or all data in the system can be shared with state, local and foreign governments for use in hiring, contracting and licensing decisions. Courts and even some private contractors can obtain some of the data under certain circumstances. "It is simply incredible that the Bush administration is willing to share this sensitive information with foreign governments and even private employers, while refusing to allow U.S. citizens to see or challenge their own terror scores," Leahy said. This system "highlights the danger of government use of technology to conduct widespread surveillance of our daily lives without proper safeguards for privacy." The concerns spread beyond Congress. "I have never seen anything as egregious as this," said Kevin Mitchell, president of the Business Travel Coalition, which advocates for business travelers. It's "evidence of what can happen when there isn't proper oversight and accountability." By late Friday, the government had received 22 written public comments about its after-the-fact disclosure of the program last month in the Federal Register, a fine-print compendium of federal rules. All either opposed it outright or objected to the lack of a direct means for people to correct any errors in the database about themselves. "As a U.S. citizen who spends much time outside the U.S., I can understand the need for good security," wrote one who identified himself as Colin Edmunds. "However, just as I would not participate in a banking/credit card system where I have no recourse to correct or even view my personal data, I cannot accept the same of my government." Privacy advocates also were alarmed. "Never before in American history has our government gotten into the business of creating mass `risk assessment' ratings of its own citizens," said Barry Steinhardt, a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union. "We are stunned" the program has been undertaken "with virtually no opportunity for the public to evaluate or comment on it." The Homeland Security Department says the nation's ability to spot criminals and other security threats "would be critically impaired without access to this data." And on Friday as the normal daily flow of a million or more people entered the United States by air, sea and land, the ATS program's computers continued their silent scrutiny. At that Virginia building with no sign, the managers of the National Targeting Center allowed an Associated Press photographer to briefly roam their work space. But he couldn't reveal the building's exact location. None of the dozens of workers under the bright fluorescent lights could be named. Some could not be photographed. The only clue he might have entered a government building was a montage of photos in the reception area of President Bush's visit to the center. But there was only one guard and a sign-in book. Inside, red digital clocks on the walls showed the time in Istanbul, Baghdad, Islamabad, Bangkok, Singapore, Tokyo, and Sydney. Although billboard-size video screens on the walls showed multiple cable news shows, there was little noise in the basketball-court-sized main workroom. Each desk had dual computer screens and earphones to hear the video soundtrack. Conferences were held in smaller workrooms divided by glass walls from the windowless main room. Round the clock, the targeters from Homeland Security's Customs and Border Protection agency analyze information from multiple sources, not just ATS. They compare names to terrorist watch lists and mine the Treasury Enforcement Communications System and other automated systems that bring data about cargo, travelers and commercial workers entering or leaving the 317 U.S. ports, searching for suspicious people and cargo. Almost every person entering and leaving the United States by air, sea or land is assessed based on ATS' analysis of their travel records and other data, including items such as where they are from, how they paid for tickets, their motor vehicle records, past one-way travel, seating preference and what kind of meal they ordered. Government officials could not say whether ATS has apprehended any terrorists. Based on all the information available to them, federal agents turn back about 45 foreign criminals a day at U.S. borders, according to Homeland Security's Customs and Border Protection spokesman Bill Anthony. He could not say how many were spotted by ATS. Officials described how the system works: applying rules learned from experience with the activities and characteristics of terrorists and criminals to the traveler data. But they would not describe in detail the format in which border agents see the results or in which the databases store the results of the ATS risk assessments. Acting Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Paul Rosenzweig told reporters Friday they could call it scoring. "It can be reduced to a number," he said, but he clearly preferred the longer description about how the rules are used. ___ On the Net: DHS privacy impact statement: http://www.dhs.gov/xlibrary/assets/privacy...pia_cbp_ats.pdf http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061202/ap_on_...veler_screening -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------

Just a few feet below the ground upon which you are walking, the earth is literally blazing with fire. It's an underground fire that now covers dozens of square miles. As pictured below, this fire has literally consumed the City of Centralia, Pennsylvania, and it now threatens Ashland, Pa, and other surrounding cities. If you continue walking you will eventually pass by several open fiery pits, which continue to belch fire and brimstone (sulfur) after forty years. The noxious fumes will make you ill. http://www.really-bad-news.com/114609.html Azureus Launches Zudeo For Finding And Sharing Video http://www.techcrunch.com/2006/12/03/azureus-launches-zudeo/ CNBC Relaunches: Heavy Focus on Video http://www.techcrunch.com/2006/12/03/cnbc-...focus-on-video/ Has The Exodus From Yahoo Begun? http://www.techcrunch.com/2006/12/03/has-t...om-yahoo-begun/ AskCity Launches.
