Muifa hit the central Philippines with flooding

6:09 p.m. ET ET Sat.,Nov.20,2004

James Wilson, Sr. Meteorologist, The Weather Channel

Muifa has been downgraded to a tropical storm with winds near 70 mph and has now thankfully pulled west of the central Philippines but the damage has been done. Over the past several days as Muifa remained stationary just off the coast, torrential rainfall persistently fell with 17-21 inches of rainfall and the island chain experienced widespread flooding and mudslides/rockslides while powerful waves battered the northeast coast. Unfortunately, this has resulted in three deaths and 1000 people were displaced from their homes. The system will slowly strengthen back to minimal Typhoon status over the next 5 days as it heads towards southern Vietnam with the threat of heavy rains.

The Atlantic and eastern Pacific Basins remain quiet.
