Powerful Typhoon Nanmadol (145 mph) is charging toward the northern Philippine island of Luzon. The extremely dangerous storm, racing northwestward from the Philippine Sea, is expected to smash into the east coast of the island in less than 24 hours. The eye of the typhoon is forecast to pass about 100 miles north of Manila. Within about 30 hours, Nanmadol will be churning into the South China Sea. After that, the still potent typhoon (about 110 mph) is likely to make a sharp turn to the north and northeast, putting Taiwan in its crosshairs.

In the Atlantic, weak Tropical Storm Otto, located about 860 miles ESE of Bermuda, will move slowly southeastward, weakening and dissipating over the next 48 hours.
