Jeb
Icy weather moves into parts of Northeast 2:37 P.M. ET 1/2/2005 B. Bernard, Meteorologist, The Weather Channel Icy weather is plaguing parts of the Northeast this afternoon as an area of precipitation overruns very cold air near the ground. Light freezing rain and sleet are greasing roads in Upstate New York and central and northern New England as the blob of precipitation sweeps eastward. In northern Maine, however, the cold air likely will be deep enough that most of the precipitation there will fall as snow; several inches are expected tonight. In the West, precipitation is generally scattered and light today with northern California--including the Sierras--getting the bulk of the showers and snowfall. Snow levels are quite low, ranging down to around 2000 feet or less in northern California. Showers will begin to increase this afternoon over Southern California coastal and mountain locations, however, leading to another round of locally heavy rain tonight and tomorrow as a cold upper-air storm drops southward just west of the Golden State. In the mountains near L. A. and San Diego, heavy snow will begin to accumulate, generally above 4500 feet.
