Jeb Posted January 24, 2005 Report Share Posted January 24, 2005 PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT..POSSIBLY NEAR FINAL http://www.erh.noaa.gov/er/box/fcsts/BOSPNSBOX.html Spotter reports National Weather Service Taunton MA 240 PM EST Mon Jan 24 2005 The first blizzard since the April fools storm of 1997 blanketed the area with a top 5 historic snowfall, accumulating within 24 hours, along with high winds, 6 foot drifts and bitterly cold temperatures. Differences in comparison to the blizzard of 78 include duration (2005 was shorter by about a day), areal coverage of a foot or more and total amount (looks to be smaller for 2005), water equivalency (this 2005 storm tended to be a colder drier event - a more easily removable powdery snow - with the exception of the south coast) and coastal flooding was comparitively non existent in 2005 as compared to the excessive and destructive flooding of 1978. Essentially we are talking large differences between 78 and 05. We should soon see more evidence within the storms following period of recovery. A couple of days for 2005 vs a week or more for 1978. The following are unofficial observations taken during the past 22 hours for the storm that has been affecting our region. appreciation is extended to highway departments, cooperative observers, skywarn spotters and media for these reports.
