This is a tough, tough part of the country for pure snows. We get our poor little hearts broken so much. There is so much ice on local ponds, lakes, that folks are out walking on 'em, makes me feel like I'm up in northern Illinois. Day after day of refreshing highs only in the 20s, low 30s with night after night after night of lows in the teens and even single numbers that made me so happy that it even brought a tear or two to my eyes, long-accustomed to seeing temps like those usually confined to northern New England for decades. All that fine fresh Arctic air. The ground is so frozen its nearly beyond modern comprehension. Every time I go outside I feel it with my foot, I feel how hard the ground is, its like pure iron, this frozen ground condition is so damned RARE in the southern places like dca/N VA it breaks your heart. There are areas of ice in a few shaded areas where some of that precious, precious snow melted, where I happily slid and did the Michael Jackson moonwalk during the course of an elated, giddy jebwalk savored during some of the freshest coldest weather ever experienced here in years and years and years and years. Yeah, We've got the Monday Morning Blues. We've enjoyed a good stretch of some of the most consistent good cold Arctic weather (considering our climo) in a good many years. February is -10 for the month, we finally have incredible surface frigidization (That is, the ground is so frozen, just CRYING for some snow!!!!!!!!! Aaaarrrgghh!!!) and in the end, after a whole winter of warm weather angst and patience, after we wasted an entire WEEK chasing models and of watching the solutions wax worse and worse and worse for DCA/N VA, in the end, what we have got here, has absolutely got to be one of the worst cases of Monday Morning Blues that I have ever experienced in my entire lifetime. This hurts. This smarts. If you remember anything, if you want to drag away any lessons from all of this sheer soul-wrenching agony, Remember that if you find yourslef in that gd damned bullseye five days out, expect an inch of slop followed by frzra and rainfall. It's the Five Day Bullseye Rule, and it's fairly reliable. Being in that damned Bullseye five days out, has surely got to be one of meteorology's worst-ever curses on snow here in DC and Northern VA. You NEVER, EVER want to be in that Bullseye five days out from the onset of the event. Becuase if you are, you ain't gettin' shyte. You might get an inch of snow and slop and torrential rain. Sound familiar, DC and VA Crews? Gawd this hurts so bad. So much cold weather, and we will barely eke out an inch of snow/sleet then frzra and very likely a ton of regular rain. We will get about 3-5 days of consolational cold weather afterward. If it gets windy, we will be tortured by thoughts of what coulda been blowing snow, drifting snow. And we should have had it! We had this thing right in the palm of our hands, and then the extreme variability of the atmosphere and the models all over creation, stole it all away from us, model run after model run. It was the thousand cuts scenario all over again as we watched our best dreams slip helplessly away in a fog of rain, warm 850 levels and a gd damned North Trend. We got the slop and the rainfall. We didn't even manage a climo snowfall of about 4 inches followed by slop and rain. We couldn't have BOUGHT a 4 inch climo snowfall with all of Bill Gates' money! We got the damn SCRAPS! Like we're some kind of scrawny junkyard dog eken' it out in the inner city urban corridor. Damn, damn damn, damn it all to heck!! None of those models is worth a damn. Throw 'em ALL out!! This time it was at the Sloatsburg Travel Plaza on the Thruway northbound. Workers watch as debris is removed. The cave in about a 50 foot by 50 foot section, came down onto the lower level. A Thruway Authority spokeswoman told MidHudsonNews.com there was no property damage and no injuries. The collapse occurred around 6:30 a.m. Just as with yesterday’s parking deck cave in at the Poughkeepsie Galleria, piled up snow was the culprit, officials said. The travel plaza is north of Interchange 15A – Sloatsburg and Suffern. The Authority's Department of Engineering, as well as members of the Authority's Bridge Safety and Inspection Unit, has been inspecting the entire parking garage. Workers using backhoes were on the scene this afternoon, removing rubble from the structure. The Authority has asked Wilbur Smith & Associates, a full-service transportation and infrastructure consulting firm, to begin inspecting the parking garage today before the partial closure is lifted. A portion of the lower level of the parking garage at the Sloatsburg Travel Plaza remains open to customers. The Authority will reopen the upper level and remaining portion of the lower level of the parking garage at the Sloatsburg Travel Plaza as soon as the inspections have been complete and conditions permit. On Thursday, part of the upper parking deck at the Poughkeepsie Galleria caved in from the weight of piled snow.
