Do you want to blog? Are you going to? Then this list of common blogging misconceptions may be helpful for you. Myths of blogging Myth: Blogging isn't for everyone. Truth: If you are an expert in your field and have something interesting to say, be it even toothpicks, you can have a blog to write about your experience (both knowledge and real life practice) in your industry. Just be yourself and find your blogging style. Myth: Blogging is for everyone Truth: If you don't have anything to say about your topic, and you can't be talking for a while (to anyone) about it, you'd rather reconsider your position on being an expert in your field. If you are just shy, overcome this complex or concede to failure. Myth: Blogs are not suitable for business websites Truth: You can establish a blog about any topic (see myth number one). If you write honestly about your opinions on the industry, your business, your product/service and your customers, you'll have a lot to write about and your customers will see who you really are. If you add your personal touch to the blog, so much the better. Myth: A blog will boost a business in a wink of an eye Truth: A blog is just another form of presenting information to the site visitors (officially, a blog is just a content management system, a CMS). So, it is not the software that makes a blog a blog, but what you write about. If you follow the truth number three, you will get loyal followers, in time, which should, hopefully, build your client base. Myth: Blogging is easy Truth: Writing text day after day is not so easy as it seems. I'd say, the easier it seems, the harder it is - so judge blogging from this point of view. However, if you are passionate about your subject, are an expert in your industry and love delivering value to your customers, you will be able to write great posts and turn your blog visitors to your friends, followers and customers (as a bonus). Myth: I can't blog, because I can't write Truth: Every writer couldn't write before he/she has started writing. Do you want to write? Then write. That simple. For a start, write what interests your customers or look for posts on how to get blogging ideas. You can write about what interests you on your topic later. Myth: I have to write a lot Truth: While this is contrary to the myth about easy blogging, you can write several posts a week. If you want, you can stick to a post a week. But you'd rather deliver something absolutely fascinating, interesting, engaging and (maybe) entertaining, so your readers will eagerly wait for another week to learn more from you. Myth: I can't be unique with so many blogs on the same topic Truth: A topic is not makes a blog unique. If you see the recent blogging ideas posts here (as per link above), you'll notice that we (me and Steve) have some different points of view on the topic. Personal opinions, angles and expertise make you stand out from the rest of the blogs. Of course, you can also either report views or write informative posts, or mix both, or write about your real life every day work. There are many angles you can write about a single topic. Myth: I'll be losing business, if I reveal my advice on a blog (this is for consultants) Truth: While it is true that people will use your advice from the blog, it takes effort to collect and apply all the expertise from the blog into one's life. That's what professionals are for. So in this case, your blog will be filtering those, who can do everything themselves, from your clients. Then again, providing free advice will get you recognition as an expert, along with traffic and links. Myth: No one will read my blog Truth: While it is true that, unless you place a blog on an already established website, you will be getting little visitors, you need to be patient in your progress. If you write interesting posts, link to other resources (including blogs), comment on other blogs (engage in the industry community), you'll get noticed. Be patient. If you setup a blog on an already established website (your corporate website, for example), you'll be simply providing something to read to your regular visitors. You'll be getting more traffic and links faster, too. Myth: You have to be controversial to get noticed Truth: While, sometimes, patting against fur gets you lots of comments and links, you can build relations with your readers in many different ways: entertain them, provide unique, expert information, give them unique information no one else does (such as information on various search engine patents). And along the way, I've developed some impressions of who we are, and where we are, as a society. When it comes to relations between blacks and whites, it's no surprise to me that we are, in many places, still separated, despite a desire for better relations. African-Americans often live in one neighborhood, whites in another. When I was recently assigned to cover a story about the history of racism in Vidor, Texas, for the "Paula Zahn Now" show, it turned out that I was surprised by some of the things I found, namely that some whites were openly telling me they still wanted separation from blacks. Vidor is a small city of about 11,000 people near the Texas Gulf Coast, not too far from the Louisiana border. Despite the fact that Beaumont, a much bigger city just 10 minutes away, is quite integrated, Vidor is not. There are very few blacks there; it's mostly white. That is in large part because of a history of racism in Vidor, a past that continues to haunt the present. "We've been trying to live down something for 40 to 50 years," said Orange County Commissioner Beamon Minton. "Once convicted, you're a convicted felon. You can't ever put that aside." Vidor was one of hundreds of communities in America known as "sundown towns," places where blacks were not welcome after dark. In some of these towns, signs -- handwritten or printed -- were posted, saying things like "Whites Only After Dark." But in general, sundown towns existed by reputation. Blacks knew they were places to avoid after dark. Charles Jones is a 62-year-old African-American man who lives in Beaumont. He told us when he was 19, he and three of his black friends were changing a flat tire on their broken down car in Vidor one night. A white policeman stopped. "He said, 'Well, let me tell ya -- you boys better wrap and get out of here, because I'm going to go to that next exit and come back around. You better be gone!' " Jones recalled. Vidor also had a reputation as a haven for the Ku Klux Klan. In fact, Jones recalls seeing a Klan rally in Vidor when he was a child. Vidor city officials point that that doesn't mean the rally was filled with Vidor residents. They say the Klan brought members from all over and targeted Vidor for rallies. One of the most memorable instances of that was in 1993, when the federal government tried to change years of racial separation, and brought a handful of black families into Vidor's public housing. In response, the Klan marched in Vidor. Within months, the few black families moved out. And African-Americans were left with a deep impression that still exists today. "They think that's a racist town," said Walter Diggles of the East Deep Texas Council of Governments. "They think when you go through Vidor, you better be very careful, and most blacks still refuse to stop." Vidor officials acknowledge racism is still present in Vidor. But they also say it is a very different place from the one it was decades ago. "We don't have a Klan," said Minton. "We haven't had a Klan in 30 years. We are trying to change our image, and we have changed, but I'm not sure we've convinced them [African-Americans] of that." Last year, for example, the Vidor schools posted a billboard, which included the face of an African-American girl as a way to attract black families. City leaders also point out that Vidor reached out to African-American victims of Hurricane Katrina, and provided temporary shelter. "The vast majority of our citizens are not racist," said Vidor Mayor Joe Hopkins. "We'd welcome anybody here who is a good solid citizen." Indeed, I was left with a genuine impression that some Vidor residents wanted the city to welcome other ethnicities. But when I sat down in a café, and talked to residents, I also heard the sound of prejudice. Peggy Fruge told me she'd welcome blacks to her neighborhood. Then she said this: "I don't mind being friends with them, talking and stuff like that, but as far as mingling and eating with them, all that kind of stuff, that's where I draw the line." I was taken aback, surprised the sound of prejudice could emerge so easily. But, I realized, her comments only reflected part of the story. In fairness, Vidor had changed, at least somewhat. It's no longer a city that actively shuns blacks. In fact, African-Americans often shop there, even if very few are residents. Still, what took me aback was how Vidor had evolved into a kind of complacency. It was trying to change, but not all that hard, and sometimes wanted to be left alone. And to a great extent, that explained why Vidor has not quite escaped its past. http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/12/08/oppenheim...town/index.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Will Gates Shake Up the Generals? As people grow wise to email scams, criminal gangs will find new ways to commit online fraud, sell fake goods or steal corporate secrets. "The attacks are becoming more sophisticated," said Dave Rand of Internet security firm Trend Micro. "It's all about making money. And they're making a lot of it," he told Reuters. In 2007, hackers will be scouring social networking sites such as MySpace to gather information for more focused attacks on people's computers. "It is definitely an area that is ripe for more exploitation by malware (malicious software)," said Ed English, Trend Micro's Chief Technology Officer for anti-spyware. People could find their computers infected with viruses that secretly record all their keystrokes or send out millions of spam email messages. Identity theft fraudsters will trawl through sites which allow people to leave their pictures and personal details, finding targets for "phishing" attacks -- fraudulent emails aimed at tricking people into revealing credit card numbers. "It is way too easy for the spyware guys to assemble a puzzle of who you are," English said. Hackers will also target people using instant messaging services or making telephone calls over the Internet in 2007, Trend Micro said. Powerful new mobile phones and portable computers will also be targets as thieves try to bypass tight security to steal emails, documents or contacts, security firm McAfee said. "Modern mobile phones are in essence miniature portable computers," the company said in its annual crime report. "Mobile devices present a serious challenge." A new version of the popular Web browser Internet Explorer released in November and Microsoft's new Vista operating system will also attract hackers, Trend Micro said. McAfee warns that spying on businesses will become more sophisticated. Criminals are hiring students to plant as sleepers in companies and huge amounts of data can be removed on small, portable memory sticks. "Corporate espionage is big business," its report says. "Data is often priceless property. Stealing trade secrets, information or contacts is a lucrative money-spinner for cyber-criminals." Security firms say Internet crime can be hard to combat because it embraces different continents and time zones. Criminals are attracted by the relative ease of making money, the speed and anonymity the Internet offers. "It beats taking a gun and walking into a 7-Eleven store," English said. http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/internet/12/1...reut/index.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------

This one involved its leading scorer and happened in its most famous arena. Denver's Carmelo Anthony and the other nine players on the court at the time were ejected for fighting during a wild brawl between the Nuggets and Knicks, triggered in part by a New York team that felt it was being shown up on its home floor. Multiple players, including Anthony, threw punches, and New York's Nate Robinson and Denver's J.R. Smith -- fouled hard by Mardy Collins on the play that started the brawl -- flew into the first row of the crowd while fighting during the NBA's scariest scene since Indiana players fought with Detroit fans in 2004. Smith had a red mark along the left side of his face, but there were no other injuries among the players. No fans were directly involved, even after the fighting spilled into the seats. According to the Knicks, the whole thing happened because the Nuggets still had their starters on the floor with 1:15 left and a 19-point lead. Denver won 123-100. "They just wanted to embarrass us," Robinson said. "It was a slap in the face to us. As a team, as a franchise, we weren't going to let that happen. A clean, hard foul happened and after that it went down from there." The foul wasn't clean at all. Collins grabbed Smith around the neck as he was going in for a breakaway layup. Anthony and Robinson quickly jumped in, and the melee went from one end of the court all the way to the other. Anthony threw a punch at Collins, and now awaits what will surely be strong punishment from a league still trying to repair its image after the melee in Auburn Hills, Mich. "Something's going to happen, but we shall see and wait," Anthony said. "I don't really want to comment on that right now." The NBA didn't, either. Spokesman Tim Frank said the league would "review the incident in its entirety. Until then, it would not be appropriate to comment." But the players can expect a harsh penalty with the brawl happening at Madison Square Garden, right in the hometown of NBA headquarters. "I feel bad for the league, I feel bad for the Denver Nuggets and the New York Knicks," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "Very poor display of respecting basketball and respecting the game in the best place in the world to play basketball." There had previously been some bad blood between Karl and Knicks coach Isiah Thomas over the handling of the Larry Brown firing. Karl and Brown are close friends. But Karl wouldn't talk about why he had his starters on the floor late in a blowout, in the closing minutes of a back-to-back that closed a five-game road trip. Thomas said he even told Anthony that he never should have been in the game at the time. "I just said to him, 'You know, you're up 20, you're up 19 with a minute and half to go, you and (Marcus) Camby really shouldn't be in the game right now,"' Thomas said. "We had surrendered, those guys shouldn't even be in the game at that point in time." After the hard foul by Collins, Smith got up and jawed with Collins and Robinson jumped in to yell at Smith -- who had thrown down a reverse dunk on a fast break minutes earlier. "They were having their way with us," Thomas said. "I think J.R. Smith had just made one dunk when he reversed and spun in the air. And I think Mardy didn't want our home crowd to see that again. So he fouled him." Anthony rushed in and pushed Robinson in the neck, triggering the roughest moment, when Robinson and Smith went flying into the stands while fighting with each other. Anthony then threw his punch at Collins, then backed away toward the center of the court. New York's Jared Jeffries ran from the baseline toward Anthony, but was tackled by a Denver player. The brawl stretched to the other end of the court toward the Nuggets' bench before coaches and security finally pulled Smith away and restored order. Smith was yelling as he was escorted back to the locker room, unsure why Collins fouled him as hard as he did. "I don't even know," Smith said. "That's the first time I ever seen the dude." Camby, Andre Miller, Eduardo Najera, Smith and Anthony were the Nuggets who were ejected; Channing Frye, David Lee, Collins, Robinson and Jeffries were the Knicks who were kicked out. "Clearly this isn't how we or the NBA wants to be perceived," Thomas said. "It should have been a foul and the guy takes two free throws and maybe some words, but it shouldn't have escalated. This isn't even a rivalry." Highlights of the fight were on in NBA locker rooms around the league, and players stopped buttoning their shirts or paused mid-sentence during interviews to see what happened. "Obviously, it's unfortunate. You never want to see that. It just doesn't belong in the NBA," said Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki, who saw clips of the brawl shortly after the Mavericks had won in New Orleans. "Hopefully we can all forget about it as soon as we can." With each team forced to put five new players on the floor, Denver finished up the win and ended a two-game losing streak. Camby had 24 points and nine rebounds, and Miller added 12 points and 10 assists. Anthony was in the midst of a superb second half, having scored 23 points in 23 minutes after halftime. He finished with 34. Camby, a former Knicks center, added seven blocked shots, and the Nuggets shot a season-best 57 percent from the field. Stephon Marbury had his best game of the season for the Knicks, scoring a season-high 31 points and adding eight assists. Eddy Curry had 19 points, Robinson scored 17, and Lee finished with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Notes: With the Nuggets a frequently rumored destination for Allen Iverson, Karl already has an idea what it's like to coach the Philadelphia guard from talking to Brown. "I've probably heard all the stories," Karl said. "I've heard about his Olympic experience with him, I heard about the Olympic team experience, period. Yeah, I've heard all the stories. Owens hauled in a couple of touchdown passes, leading the Dallas Cowboys to a playoff-bolstering 38-28 victory over Atlanta and getting back at Falcons nemesis DeAngelo Hall along the way Saturday night. But, T.O. being T.O., there had to be some controversy, too. Afterward, Hall said that Owens spit in his face when the Falcons' cornerback came out jawing on the very first play. "I lost all respect for the guy," Hall said. "We were kind of walking face to face, walking back to the huddle, and he just hauled off and spit in my face." It was that kind of night for the Falcons. While Michael Vick and Morten Andersen set NFL records, their team took a devastating loss in NFC wild-card race after two straight wins and overcoming an early 14-0 deficit to the Cowboys. Dallas (9-5) bounced back from a 42-17 home loss to New Orleans and protected its NFC East lead. "It was as big a game as we've had this year," quarterback Tony Romo said. "I think we are trailing everybody when it comes to tiebreakers. We knew the importance of this one coming in." Marion Barber clinched it for the Cowboys, scoring on two punishing runs after the Falcons went ahead. Owens, who was kept out of the end zone by Hall when the two faced off in Week 1 of the 2005 season, took care of that blemish. Owens made a 7-yard touchdown reception with a brilliant one-handed catch, then blew past Hall to haul in a 51-yarder. T.O. toasted both scores with the same gesture. He faced the crowd with his arms outstretched -- that's the `T' -- then clasped his hands in a circle above his head -- that's an `O.' But what about spitting at Hall? "I got frustrated and I apologize for that," Owens told the NFL Network. "It was a situation where he kept bugging me and getting in my face. He just kept getting in my face." Vick tied a career high with four touchdown passes and eclipsed Bobby Douglass' 34-year-old record for most rushing yards in a season by a quarterback. He has 990 yards, breaking Douglass' mark of 968 with the 1972 Chicago Bears. "It means a lot. It's s everything I've worked for in my career," Vick said. "I'm disappointed that we didn't get the win, but it's a milestone." Andersen, meanwhile, became the leading scorer in NFL history. The 46-year-old kicker booted four extra points, giving him 2,437 points for his career and breaking Gary Anderson's mark of 2,434. It wasn't enough to hold off the Cowboys. Barber put them ahead for good on a 9-yard run with 21/2 minutes left in the third quarter, leaving Chris Crocker sprawled on the turf. Barber added a 3-yard TD run with 2:18 remaining to clinch the victory. "We had to regroup," Owens said. "We showed some character when we came back." Romo, coming off his worst game since taking over the starting job, completed 22 of 29 for 278 yards. He spread it around -- Terry Glenn had five receptions for 96 yards, Owens caught five for 69 yards and Jason Witten pulled in five passes for 56 yards. Vick had one horrible pass, which was intercepted by DeMarcus Ware and returned 41 yards for a touchdown on the first play of a wild second quarter. Otherwise, the Atlanta quarterback played well, completing 16 of 24 for 237 yards and running eight times for 56 yards. Also, he didn't have any obscene gestures for the home crowd. He was fined $10,000 and donated $10,000 to charity after making such a gesture in Atlanta's last game at the Georgia Dome. The four touchdown passes tied Vick's personal best from an overtime tie with Pittsburgh in 2002, his first year as a starter. "We let it slip away," said Vick, who went out late in the game with a groin injury, casting doubt on his status for next week's game against Carolina. "I don't know how, but we let it slip away." Still smarting from their blowout loss to New Orleans, the Cowboys started this one like they wanted to do the same thing to the Falcons. Dallas jumped ahead on Romo's first TD pass to Owens, who pulled the ball in with his right arm before falling out of bounds with Hall all over him. Then it was Ware's turn for an even more spectacular play. Vick, under pressure from Chris Canty as he dropped back to throw, managed to flip a pass over the defensive end -- and right into the arms of Ware, lurking behind his teammate. He took off the other way, breaking a feeble attempt at a tackle by Vick on the way to giving the Cowboys a 14-0 lead. The Falcons didn't fold, however, getting back in the game after a big play by their defense. Just three plays after an interception by Lawyer Milloy was wiped out by a penalty, Romo had a pass tipped at the line by Rod Coleman. The fluttering ball fell into the arms of Atlanta linebacker Michael Boley, who returned it 40 yards to the Dallas 12. Vick ripped off an 11-yard run, then flipped a 1-yard touchdown pass to Griffith to pull the Falcons to 14-7. The Atlanta offense did all the work on its next possession, driving 63 yards in five plays for the tying touchdown. Vick threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Michael Jenkins, left all alone in the left side of the end zone. After that touchdown, Andersen punched through the extra point that broke Anderson's career scoring record. The 46-year-old kicker threw up his arms and leaped into the arms of holder Matt Schaub before being mobbed by his teammates. "It's tough to talk about individual records when you lose a football game," Andersen said. "It's bittersweet for me." Romo went deep to Owens to put Dallas back ahead. The receiver cut to the inside and ran right past Hall, catching the ball in stride for a 51-yard touchdown. Vick capped off the 35-point quarter with his third TD pass, this one with just 11 seconds remaining in the half. After an illegal formation penalty negated a scoring pass to Griffith, Vick fired a blistering pass to Ashley Lelie for an 8-yard touchdown, the ball seeming to go right through the hands of defender Roy Williams. Vick put the Falcons ahead for the first time on the first series of the second half. He hooked up for the second time with Griffith, who again managed to get all alone for a 5-yard TD catch. It was all Dallas from there. Martin Gramatica connected on a 48-yard field goal, and Barber did the rest. Notes: The Falcons have lost three straight home games. ... Barber rushed 69 yards on 11 carries. ... Before the game, Atlanta coach Jim Mora addressed his team about comments he made on a Seattle radio station expressing his desire to coach at the University of Washington, his alma mater. Mora issued an apology on Friday, saying he was merely kidding. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/foot...ex.html?cnn=yes ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bad apples Beyond the sucker punches and sorry stunts at Madison Square Garden on Saturday came the most pathetic part of all for the NBA – Isiah Thomas whining about run-up scores and poor sportsmanship, like the once proud New York Knicks are nothing but a lowly college mid-major in need of mercy. Just when you thought Zeke couldn't embarrass this franchise any worse, just when you thought he couldn't let down this city any more, just when you thought building and coaching a dog team wasn't enough, there is this: a whiny coach making excuses for dirty fouls and poser players. Oh, there were all sorts of people at fault when the Knicks and Denver Nuggets decided Saturday night was all right for fighting, and David Stern will certainly hammer them the way he did Detroit and Indiana for their brawl in Auburn Hills. Carmelo Anthony is going to sit his 31.6-point scoring average for a long time. Isiah Thomas isn't the only one in the wrong here. But his postgame press conference performance was the most disappointing, if telling, of them all. He blamed Denver's perceived running up of the score, complete with a highlight reel dunk, as simply too much for his humble guys to handle. "Up 19 with a minute and a half to go, (Carmelo Anthony) and (Marcus) Camby really shouldn't be in the game," Thomas said. "We had surrendered. (Those) guys shouldn't even be in the game at that point." Thomas is correct about this much. The Nuggets were brutalizing the Knicks on their home court, 119-100 with 1:15 remaining, making a mockery of Thomas' salary rich club. And yes, stars Anthony and Camby were still in the game, maybe even because Denver coach George Karl wanted to hit up Thomas for firing Larry Brown, Karl's old University of North Carolina buddy. Whether or not Thomas told Mardy Collins to exact some revenge by tackling a breaking J.R. Smith around the neck is something Stern will decide. But Thomas may not have had to say anything. The boorish play might simply be Collins responding to his coach's unspoken outrage at the injustice of once again having his team get its ass kicked. It's certainly telling that Collins did nearly the same thing – a late flagrant foul – in Indiana's beat down of the Knicks on Friday. So that's back-to-back flagrant fouls in back-to-back blowout losses for New York. But those are Isiah's Knicks. This is on him. If he had an ounce of self-respect, he'd realize there is only one person to blame for this disaster and it isn't George Karl for his substitution pattern. Instead, he went with some sad, victim routine. "They were having their way with us," Thomas said. "I think J.R. Smith had just made one dunk when he reversed and spun in the air. And I think Mardy didn't want our home crowd to see that again. So he fouled him." Said Nate Robinson: "It's like a slap in the face, saying we're going to embarrass you like that." Boy, thank goodness the NBA has a coach and a player willing to stand up for sportsmanship like these two. We know a respectful sort such as Robinson would never, ever show up an opponent by, say, bounce-passing a ball off the backboard to himself so he could dunk it. And we know if, say, such a thing happened on his watch, say Nov. 29 in Cleveland, Thomas would never, ever leave Robinson in the game like it was completely acceptable. Of course not. Not these virtuous souls. "If we're up 20 points, we're not going to play Stephon (Marbury) and Eddy (Curry)," Robinson said. Of course not, because if the Knicks were up 20, Robinson would just honor his fallen opponent. Like when he botched that ESPY-campaign self-alley-oop and claimed humbly, "I won't be trying it again unless we're up by 20." The good news is the Knicks aren't getting up 20 on anyone anytime soon. If Robinson really wants this to end, if he wants the MSG boos silenced, then he should get his teammates to compete hard the first 46 minutes, not just foul hard in the final two. If Thomas wants to stop people from running up the score on him, then he should have built a better club. He shouldn't have wasted all that money on illogical signings, outrageous trades and heartless characters. No, Thomas and his guys weren't the only ones in the wrong Saturday. The Nuggets have their own issues. But when it was over, at least they weren't crying, at least they weren't punking. It's all gone in New York now – the pride, the respect, the dignity. This isn't just a bad team; this is a bad act. A once proud franchise and fan base brought to its knees as its pathetic coach makes excuses and whines for mercy. http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=dw-k...o&type=lgns -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brawl rulings likely to come Monday The NBA could wait until Monday before ruling on penalties resulting from the brawl between the Nuggets and Knicks. All 10 players on the court, including league scoring leader Carmelo Anthony, were ejected after the melee Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. The mayhem began when New York's Mardy Collins flagrantly fouled the Nuggets' J.R. Smith with 1:15 left in Denver's 123-100 victory. Anthony faces an automatic suspension for throwing a punch, and Smith and New York's Nate Robinson will be penalized for their fight that spilled into the stands. With so much footage to review and players, coaches and officials to interview, the league probably will need time to make its ruling. "We don't have timetable for when the decision will be reached," NBA spokesman Tim Frank said Sunday. Still, it might well come Monday since both teams play that night. The league's policy has been to rule on any suspensions before the teams involved play their next game. The Knicks host Utah on Monday; the Nuggets are home against Washington. Anthony could receive one of the harshest penalties. He twice escalated actions, shoving Robinson in the neck and throwing a hard punch that dropped Collins just when things seemed to be calming down. Last season, Orlando's Keyon Dooling was suspended five games without pay and Seattle's Ray Allen three for their fight, which also spilled into the crowd. Dooling threw a punch that did not connect. http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ap-n...p&type=lgns --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Counterpunch to Commish So David Stern imposes his will to slowly, surely reshape the NBA, with collared shirts and ticky-tack technical fouls on players for belaboring calls ruling the league's days and nights. The commissioner scrubs and scrubs, desperate to cleanse the league of the stain from The Palace at Auburn Hills two years ago. If nothing else, these orders of dress codes and indiscriminate T's were populist offerings to a disillusioned public. And yet for all of the commissioner's surface touch of his players' appearance and behavior, it turns out to be worthless when all hell breaks loose at Madison Square Garden, a Saturday night at the fights leaving the worst of the NBA to wash over the world again. Whatever the reason, these are the NBA nights that stay with people. There's superstar Carmelo Anthony looking like the worst kind of flailing fool, sucker-punching and running under the bright lights of Broadway. The rules are different in the NBA, where boorish behavior gets treated differently than the rest of sports. These images stay with the public, shaping stereotypes of those beneath the headbands and tattoos. Albert Haynesworth can smash his cleat-clad foot into the unmasked face of a Dallas Cowboy and baseball can empty benches with beanball brawls, but those acts are never made to stand up for the entirety of the sport. Basketball has a different burden, born out of Ron Artest's treatment of a wayward soft drink cup as though it had been a jagged piece of glass. The rules for Stern's sport were forever transformed that night in the suburban Detroit stands, when the NBA lost its compass, lost its way. Two years later, the New York Knicks and Denver Nuggets were the worst kind of posers, all false bravado and fake tough-guy posturing. On every level, this was an embarrassment. Everything started with New York's Mardy Collins clocking Denver's J.R. Smith on a breakaway in the final moments, a rookie hit job that had the resemblance of a coach's order. From there, the NBA could've lived with Nate Robinson wrestling Smith into the beautiful people in the Garden's front row, but everything changed when Anthony – one of the faces of the league – turned the court into an unruly mess with a right-cross upside Collins' head. Anthony should be suspended a minimum of eight games for that, a glancing blow that could've turned Collins into Rudy Tomjanovich had it connected with the ferocity with which it was unleashed. The top scorer in the league and an MVP candidate, Anthony dissolved into knucklehead tendencies, escalating a sorry scene into something far more dangerous. Mostly, this melee had no basketball nobility in its roots. No redeeming value. When this kind of thing happened in the past with tough, physical basketball, people weren't so fast to brand the whole NBA for it. That'll be the case on Saturday night, though. The Knicks and Nuggets don't defend. They preen. They pose. They talk tough games, but they play finesse basketball. Isiah Thomas and his Knicks were puffing their chests, pretending as though they had upheld some kind of code. From the cheap-shot foul to the bellyaching over Denver running up the score, they were an embarrassment. They don't defend the paint, don't defend the Garden, and they need to understand that grabbing Nuggets players around the neck doesn't defend the franchise's honor. They started a humiliating night for the NBA, even if Denver emboldened it. Strange as it sounds, when it was Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning trading haymakers in the 1998 playoffs, there was no lingering damage to the NBA. They didn't throw sucker punches and start backpedaling, the way Carmelo did. L.J. and 'Zo, they had a history. They had reasons. They held hatred in the hearts, inspiring intrigue in the rivalry of the Knicks and Heat. For good reason, those fights didn't label the league as a thug's game, because the people had the good basketball sense to see its context within the spillover of serious basketball. Just like the brawl at the Palace two years ago, though, this was garbage at the Garden. Yes, J.R. Smith had a right to get into Collins' face for dragging him down, but the rest of it insulted everyone's sensibilities. For the Knicks, it's a sorry testament of Thomas' regime when the team's enforcer is 5-foot-6 Nate Robinson. As it turned out, the Garden hadn't seen this kind of midget mayhem since Vince McMahon had Sky Low-Low working the WWF undercard. Even so, no one in Olympic Tower should be laughing today. Barnum and Bailey snuck into the Garden, its elephants leaving a mess on the floor. These teams, they don't play tough enough to dare fight on the floor. What they did was leave the rest of the NBA with the residue of Auburn Hills, the kind of video clip that lives on in the 24-hour news cycle. Hit play, over and over, and watch the commissioner's vision for cleaning up the NBA's image go directly into the crapper. Midget wrestling and a superstar swinging for a suspension at the Garden, the kind of pro basketball night that stays with the public, that comes back to haunt this league once again. http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=aw-b...o&type=lgns ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trying to stop Nuggets' fun, Knicks start latest NBA headache It was late in the fourth quarter. The New York Knicks were losing badly. The Madison Square Garden crowd was cheering for the Nuggets' Carmelo Anthony. So by the time Denver's J.R. Smith went in on another fast break Saturday, the Knicks had had enough. Mardy Collins figured he'd put a stop to the fun with a hard foul. Instead, it was the start of a wild brawl -- the last thing the NBA needed two years after its last melee, and the last thing the Knicks need in a season already spiraling downward. The fight went from one end of the court to the other. Carmelo Anthony dropped Collins with a punch, Smith and Nate Robinson went flying into the stands while fighting, and six other players were ejected. Anthony, the NBA's leading scorer, apologized Sunday but he could be looking at a suspension of more than five games. The NBA was reviewing the incident and interviewing people involve, and it could announce penalties before both teams play Monday night. What caused the meltdown? It seems to come down to this: The Knicks felt dissed. "The score period, and the guys that they had in," Robinson said after the game. The Knicks (9-17) didn't practice Sunday and weren't commenting further. Anthony, Camby, Smith and fellow starter Andre Miller were all still on the floor with Denver leading by 19 points with 1:15 to play when Collins prevented Smith from another easy basket by grabbing him by the neck and taking him to the floor. Smith rose and immediately started jawing with Collins, and Robinson jumped in to pull Smith away. Anthony shoved Robinson away, and Robinson and Smith then tumbled into the front row while fighting. Just as things appeared to be calming down, Anthony threw a hard punch that floored Collins, and New York's Jared Jeffries sprinted from the baseline toward halfcourt in an effort to get at Anthony, but was tackled by a Denver player. By the time security had finally contained Smith, they were nearly at the opposite end of the court from where the altercation started, making it the NBA's scariest scene since the brawl at Auburn Hills, Mich., between Pacers players and Pistons fans two years ago. "Without being there, I can tell you the power of emotions can be an underrated thing in our game," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. Anthony said Sunday he was sorry his emotions got the best of him. "Last night's altercation with the Knicks escalated further than it should have. I take full responsibility for my actions in the matter," Anthony said in a statement. He apologized to fans, the Nuggets, the NBA, his own family -- and to Collins and his family. "My actions were inexcusable, and I am sorry for making this an even more embarrassing situation," Anthony said. Knicks coach Isiah Thomas, who took over for Larry Brown after one season, said he told Anthony that he and Camby shouldn't have been in the game after it was decided. A source in the league, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation into the brawl, said that Thomas also advised Anthony not to go near the basket shortly before the hard foul occurred. Nuggets coach George Karl had just dispatched three players to the scorer's table to check in while the Knicks brought the ball up the floor. But before play stopped so they could check in, New York turned it over, starting Smith's fast break. Two minutes earlier, Smith had thrown down a reverse dunk on the break, as both he and Anthony seemed trying to impress their group of fans. Smith is from New Jersey, and Anthony, who scored 23 points in the second half, is a New York native. The Knicks weren't enjoying the show. Robinson said the Knicks were "just trying to fight, come back from the deficit and they got their star players still in. It's a slap in the face to us as a franchise." One of many this year. It's been a miserable season for the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, where they have been routinely booed while compiling a 4-10 record. And they were in the midst of their second straight beating -- Collins, in fact, committed a flagrant foul at the tail end of a 112-96 loss at Indiana on Friday night. The final score on Saturday was 123-100, Nuggets. But while there is no excuse for their actions Saturday, nor is there any reason why Anthony should have had such a prominent role. Before the game, Karl was talking about his maturation as a player and a person, and Anthony was one of the captains of the U.S. team in the world championships. The NBA has taken numerous steps to clean up its image after the fiasco in Detroit, implementing a dress code and its community relations initiative NBA Cares last season, and trying to eliminate excessive complaints to officials this season. With Anthony appearing in marketing campaigns to promote the NBA, the league can't have him participating in an incident that's sure to trigger more discussions about all that is still wrong with its players. Yet one player involved in the Pacers-Pistons fight in 2004 said all the attention to a couple of brawls is overblown. "Listen, the NHL lets them fight. Fights happen in baseball. Fights happen in football," Indiana forward Jermaine O'Neal said. "Why are we under scrutiny about our game?" AP Sports Writer Steve Herman in Indianapolis contributed to this report. http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=Ar.w...p&type=lgns ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10 players ejected after Nuggets-Knicks brawl Denver's J.R. Smith was still seething as he was escorted to the locker room seconds after he and nine other players were ejected for a brawl in a game against New York on Saturday night. Kenyon Martin, who is injured and not playing, draped his arm around Smith and coaxed him to the locker room while Smith continued an obscenity-laded tirade. Smith appeared to have a raised red mark along the top of his cheek. "They caught up. They know I live here," said Smith, who is from New Jersey. Spike Lee and his young daughter hurried away from their courtside seats, which were near where the brawl occurred, and briefly stopped in the hallway to watch a replay on the monitor. "They show it? Whoa," he said before leaving the arena. The Nuggets' players were the first ones removed from the court after a fight that began with Denver leading 119-100 when Collins grabbed Smith around the neck with both hands as Smith was going in for a breakaway layup. Smith got up and jawed with Collins, and New York's Nate Robinson jumped in to yell at Smith. Anthony rushed in and pushed Robinson in the neck, triggering the roughest moment, when Robinson and Smith went flying into the stands while fighting with each other. Anthony appeared to throw a punch at Collins, and then backed away toward the center of the court. New York's Jared Jeffries ran from the baseline toward Anthony, but was tackled by a Denver player. The brawl stretched to the other end of the court toward the Nuggets' bench before coaches and security finally pulled Smith away and restored order. Anthony was the first player in the hallway after the ejections and peeled off his jersey as he stood defiantly in the space between the doors leading to the two locker rooms. "I ain't going nowhere," Anthony said before being nudged toward the locker room. He scored 34 points before the melee took place with 1:15 left in the Nuggets' 123-100 victory over the Knicks. Before any players left the court, two police officers moved into the hallway from outside and stood along the wall. After the players arrived, a security officer yelled: "Lock both those doors, nobody goes in. Nobody goes in." Along with Anthony and Smith, Denver's Marcus Camby, Andre Miller and Eduardo Najera were ejected. Knicks who were thrown out were Channing Frye David Lee, Collins, Robinson and Jeffries. "Deja vu, I've been here before," Camby said to no one in particular as he walked to the locker room. "This is crazy." In 2001 when he was with the Knicks, Camby was involved in an incident with Danny Ferry. After all the ejected Nuggets were in the locker room, security guards locked the doors behind them. Martin had to beat on the door and have it unlocked when he wanted to leave. He stood in the bowels of the arena and chatted about the incident with Steve Francis. Finally, the Knicks who were tossed were led toward the locker room. It was mostly a quiet exodus, with only Quentin Richardson stopping to turn around and glare toward the Nuggets' locker room. http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ap-n...p&type=lgns ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One climber found dead; two remain missing on mountain http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/12/17/missing.climbers/index.html Will Smith's 'Pursuit' pays off http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Movies/12/...e.ap/index.html Seven found dead in Missouri college town http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/12/17/missouri....s.ap/index.html NBA Brawl - Yahoo Search Results http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=NBA+Brawl...ss&ei=UTF-8 Check out the Pacers/Pistons Brawl on eBaumsworld! http://www.ebaumsworld.com/nbabrawl.html ------------------------------------------------------- Carlisle: 'I was fighting for my life out there' Fists were flying. So were cups, plastic bottles and even a chair in one of the ugliest NBA brawls ever -- and Indiana's Ron Artest was right in the middle of it. Artest and Stephen Jackson charged into the stands and fought with fans in the final minute of their game against the Detroit Pistons on Friday night, and the brawl forced an early end to the Pacers' 97-82 win. Officials stopped the game with 45.9 seconds remaining after pushing and shoving between the teams spilled into the stands once fans got involved by throwing things at the players near the scorer's table. "It's the ugliest thing I've seen as a coach or player," said Pistons coach Larry Brown, who was in the middle of the confrontation, trying to break it up. After several minutes of players fighting with fans in the stands, a chair, beer, ice and popcorn were thrown at the Pacers as they made their way to the locker room in one of the scariest brawls in an NBA game. "I felt like I was fighting for my life out there," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "I'm sorry the game had to end this way." The Palace announcer said the game was being stopped and pleaded with fans not to throw things. About three hours following the startling finish, Auburn Hills police walked out of a television trailer with videotapes gathered from various media outlets. Officers interviewed witnesses at the arena in suburban Detroit and planned to talk to the players involved. "We'll put it all together, take it to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office and have them review it and they'll decide if there are any charges," Auburn Hills deputy chief Jim Mynsberge said. "I hope we can do it before Thanksgiving." "At this time, we don't have any indication of major injuries," he added. It all started when Detroit's Ben Wallace went in for a layup and was fouled hard by Artest from behind. After being fouled, Wallace wheeled around and pushed Artest in the face. The benches emptied and punches were thrown. As the players continued shoving each other near center court and coaches tried to restore order, Artest sprawled out on his back on the scorer's table, looking relaxed. Just when it appeared tempers had died down, Artest was struck by a cup and beverage thrown from the stands. He jumped up and charged into the stands, throwing punches as he climbed over seats. Fans were punching back, and Jackson and another teammate joined Artest in the melee. "I was worried about Stephen Jackson and Artest, as silly as they were acting," Brown said. Security personnel and ushers tried to break up the fighting. Former Pistons player Rick Mahorn, who was seated courtside as a Detroit radio analyst, tried to stop the brawl in the stands. "The police investigation is ongoing and that's it," said Pistons spokesman Matt Dobek, who refused to comment further. Detroit's Rasheed Wallace and Indiana's David Harrison were also in or near the stands. Both were trying to break up the fights. Later, a man in a Pistons jersey approached Artest on the court, shouting at him. Artest punched him in the face, knocking the man to the floor before leaving the court. Artest was pulled away, and the fan charged back. Jermaine O'Neal stepped in and punched the man. "The NBA is withholding comment until it can review the incident," NBA spokesman Tim Frank said. Players from both teams left the arena without comment. Quentin Richardson of the Phoenix Suns watched the brawl on television. "I have never seen a fight like that in a game since I was in high school," he said. "Man, there are going to be some lawsuits. You don't think some of those fans aren't going to want some NBA money?" The Lakers' Lamar Odom saw it for the first time as he was being interviewed. "Whoooo. When you see things like that, just think about what it takes for NBA players to go into a crowd," Odom said. "Sometimes fans get kind of out of hand, but it must have taken a lot for NBA players to go into a crowd and start a fight." Police prevented reporters from crossing the loading dock to get to Indiana's locker room or the area where the Pacers' bus was located. "I'm just embarrassed for our league and disappointed for our young people to see that," Brown said. Artest has been involved in some bizarre situations, but his latest antics topped them all. Earlier this month, he was benched for two games for asking Carlisle for time off because of a busy schedule that included promoting a soon-to-be-released rap album. Artest also destroyed television monitors at Madison Square Garden two years ago and missed the team flight to Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals at Detroit last season. He has proved to be as talented as he is unpredictable. Before the contest was stopped, Artest had quite a game and the Pacers were dominating the defending NBA champions in their first meeting since the Eastern Conference finals. Artest scored 17 of his 24 points in the first quarter and the Pacers led by 20 in the second. Detroit used a 9-0 outburst early in the fourth quarter to close within 82-77. The Pacers put the game away when Austin Croshere and Jackson made 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to push their lead to 12 points with 4:31 left. Despite the lopsided score in the final minute, most of the key players for both teams were still in the game. The contest drew a capacity crowd of 22,076, but it had thinned toward the end of the game as the Pacers pulled away. Richard Hamilton led the Pistons with 20 points. Indiana (7-2) has the best record in the East and the Pistons fell to 4-4. The Pacers' next game is Saturday night at home against Orlando. Detroit hosts Charlotte on Sunday. Game notes Musical artist Kid Rock and Chris Chelios of the Red Wings sat next to each other at courtside.
